SEC Football: Ranking the top five games since the 2017 season
No. 5: 2019 #2 LSU vs #3 Alabama
In a game that looked like one you’d see on Sundays, LSU marched their undefeated team into Tuscaloosa for an all-timer.
The matchup was dubbed as the “Second Game of the Century” because it came after the 2011 “Game of the Century” between the same two teams.
Behind future Heisman Trophy winning signal caller, Joe Burrow, the Tigers looked to end an eight game losing streaking against the Crimson Tide.
And Alabama, as 6.5 point favorites, looked to prove that LSU was still their little brother in the SEC West.
LSU got out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter but a 77-yard punt return touchdown by Jaylen Waddle brought the Tide within 3.
However, LSU would then go on a monster second quarter where they outscored Alabama 23-6 to put the halftime score at 33-13.
But Alabama wasn’t done yet as they made things interesting by bringing the game within 5 points on three separate occasions.
Ultimately it proved to be too little too late as LSU won 46-41.
Aftermath:
LSU ended up moving to No. 1 in the college football playoff rankings the following week and Joe Burrow cemented his case to become the Heisman Trophy winner.
Alabama’s 31 game home winning streak was snapped and they ended up in the Citrus Bowl against Michigan.
17 players who competed in the game ended up becoming first round picks in the NFL Draft.
