SEC Football: Ranking the top five games since the 2017 season
No. 3: 2018 #6 LSU vs #16 Texas A&M
This is the only game on the list that didn’t have much significance on the college football playoff.
So it’s got to be a good one, right?
Well, a combined point total of 146 points and seven overtimes sure made for a classic.
Fast forward to the fourth quarter. LSU just shifted momentum by scoring a couple touchdowns, one of which was a fumble recovery returned 58 yards for a score. They now lead Texas A&M 31-24.
The Aggies have one last shot to tie it up. But A&M quarterback Kellen Mond fumbled the snap and was picked off with about 30 seconds to go in the game.
LSU gave Head Coach Ed Orgeran a Gatorade shower, the assistant coaches came out of the press box, and the Tigers moved to 10 wins on the season.
But not so fast as Lee Corso would say.
After reviewing the play, it was determined that Mond’s knee was down when he attempted to pick up the football after he fumbled the snap.
No interception, no LSU win, and time to play on.
The defensive coaches raced back up to the press box and Coach O looked on still soaked with Gatorade.
The Aggies continued their drive all the way into the redzone with one second left on the clock. A 19-yard touchdown pass tied the game as the clock hit triple zero.
And now begins one of the craziest overtime periods in the history of college football.
It started off with each side settling for field goals and trading a pair of touchdowns.
Now entering 3OT, both teams are required to attempt a 2-point conversion after scoring a touchdown.
Well, both teams scored and converted their 2-point conversion in 3OT. Then in 4OT both teams settled for field goals again. In 5OT both teams scored touchdowns and both failed to convert their 2-point conversions. And in 6OT both teams scored touchdowns and converted their 2-point conversions.
So now the score stands at 66-66 going into 7OT. If you watched this live, it must’ve been anxiety inducing even if you didn’t have a dog in the fight.
In 7OT LSU scores again but doesn’t convert their 2-point conversion. The Aggies now have an opportunity to finish the Tigers off and they do. They score and complete the 2-point conversion and all of College Station ran onto Kyle Field.
Texas A&M wins 74-72.
Game Notes:
The game lasted 4 hours and 53 minutes.
The teams combined for 146 points which is the most in a Division 1 FBS game ever.
Both teams combined for over 1,000 yards of total offense with each team recording over 200 yards rushing.

It’s safe to say there may not be a game like this one in a long, long time.
