SEC Football: 6 teams ranked in 2022 preseason Top 25 coaches poll
Fresh off an all-SEC championship matchup in the championship game, SEC Football has six teams in the newly released Top 25 coaches poll. Here are the SEC teams in the Top 25 Coaches’ top poll.
6 SEC Football teams ranked in 2022 preseason Top 25 coaches poll
Alabama was ranked first in the Coaches Poll. The Tide had 64 first-place votes. Alabama comes off a loss against Georgia in the National Championship game. Coach Saban called it a “rebuilding year.” While that seems like a typical Saban response, it is a little unfair to say that for any second-place finish for a college football program. That quote just shows the expectation that comes with the best program in the country.
Georgia was ranked third in the coaches poll. The Bulldogs had 5 first-place votes. Georgia comes off their first national championship in 40 years. As mentioned earlier, they beat Alabama in the National Championship game. They beat the Tide after Kelee Ringo picked off Bryce Young and returned it for a touchdown. Their defense led the way for their team last year. It was a historic defense that may have been the best defense in the history of the SEC.
Texas A&M was ranked seventh in the coaches poll. Texas A&M comes off a year where they beat number 1 ranked Alabama in the regular season. They finished 8-4 on the season. Texas A&M finished the season losing to LSU in week 13. They decided to opt out of the TaxSlayer bowl after several players tested positive for Covid.
Kentucky was ranked 21st in the coaches poll. Kentucky comes off a year where they started the season 6-0. In week 7, they faced Georgia and lost badly 30-13. After the loss to Georgia, the Wildcats lost two straight to Tennessee and Mississippi State. After losing two straight, they finished the season strong with four straight wins. Including a win against Iowa in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl.
Arkansas was ranked 23rd in the coaches poll. Arkansas comes off a very weird year. To start off the year, Arkansas won four straight. Then they lost three straight. Arkansas lost to Georgia (which is expected), Ole Miss, and Auburn. Then they only lost one game the rest of the year. Their one loss the rest of the season came against Alabama in a scoring thriller. They won the Outback bowl against Penn State.
Ole Miss was ranked 25th in the coaches poll. Ole Miss comes off a year where they went 10-3. They started the season by winning three straight. In week 5, they lost to Alabama in a blowout. After losing to Alabama, they again won three straight. In week 9, they lost to Auburn in a close game.
After losing to Auburn, they would not lose again in the regular season. Although they wouldn’t lose again in regular season play, they wouldn’t be so successful in post-season play. They lost to Baylor in a non-contested game in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Other SEC Football teams that received votes in the coaches poll were Tennessee (163 total votes), LSU (143 total votes), Auburn (98 total votes), Mississippi State (19 total votes), and Florida (17 total votes). The SEC has the most teams in the coaches’ poll. Quite certainly, the SEC is still the best conference in college football.
