Auburn Football: 3 players set to breakout during 2022 season
By Matt Melton
Auburn Football saw breakout seasons from a few players in particular a year ago, most notably tight end John Samuel Shenker. Looking ahead to this season however, who are some names that the Tigers could see a similar breakout campaign from in 2022?
3 Auburn Football players set to breakout during 2022 season
Jayson Jones
2021 Stats: 19 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks
A former four-star in-state prospect in the 2020 class, Jones has spent the previous two seasons at Oregon, but did not see time with the Ducks until a year ago where he collected 19 tackles. Having transferred to Auburn in the offseason, Jones could be set for an even bigger 2022, a year in which he should be one of the top names along the Tigers defensive line.
Malcolm Johnson Jr
2021 Stats: 6 receptions, 82 yards, 1 TD
One of the names from a talented 2020 wide receiver class for the Tigers, Johnson enters his third season at Auburn this fall, coming off a year in which he caught six passes as primarily a reserve at the position. The junior is likely set to take a big jump in production this season however, one in which Johnson could be one of the top options at wide receiver for the Tigers.
Ze’Vian Capers
2021 Stats: 6 receptions, 54 yards
Another name from that Auburn 2020 wide receiver class, Capers is a junior who has seen time with the Tigers each of the past two seasons, totaling a combined 13 receptions during that span. At 6-foot-4, Capers is one of the bigger wideouts on the Tigers roster, and could be one of Auburn’s top options at the position this season, potentially translating to a big breakout 2022 campaign.
In addition to those three, here are a few other Auburn Football breakout candidates to watch for this season:
- TE Luke Deal
- LB Wesley Steiner
- TE/WR Landen King
