A potential sleeper team in SEC Football this season, Tennessee kicks off week one for the conference as the Volunteers open their 2022 campaign Thursday night with a home matchup against Ball State, the first ever meeting between the two programs.

Entering year two of the Josh Heupel era in Knoxville, the Volunteers are coming off a 7-6 season a year ago, one in which Tennessee fell in the Music City Bowl in their final game of the year. The first winning season for the Volunteers since 2019, Tennessee was also one of the SEC’s top teams when it came to offense a year ago, averaging 39.3 PPG to rank top 10 nationally.

Speaking of the offense, Tennessee should once again be among the conference’s best in 2022 when it comes to putting up points as the Volunteers return multiple key names such as Hendon Hooker, Cedric Tillman, and Jabari Small. Defensively, the Volunteers should continue to improve as well, returning names such as leading tackler Jeremy Banks, Aaron Beasley, Trevon Flowers, and more.

As for Ball State, the Cardinals are coming off a 6-7 2021 season, a year after they finished 7-1 during the 2020 campaign. Finishing last in the MAC West, the Cardinals also made their second consecutive bowl appearance, the first time that Ball State had done that since 2012-13, which also happened to be the last time they had back-to-back winning seasons.

Entering their seventh season under head coach Mike Neu, the Cardinals return a few notable players from a year ago on offense such as running backs Carson Steele and Will Jones, as well as Jayson Jackson and Yo’Heinz Tyler at receiver. Ball State will also have a new starter at quarterback, while the defense, despite losing multiple key names, does return one of their top tacklers in linebacker Clayton Coll.

Tennessee vs Ball State SEC Football Prediction

This game simply has all the makings of a big Tennessee win. The Volunteers should control the game from start-to-finish, and assuming Tennessee claims an early lead, the Cardinals will simply not be able to keep up offensively.

Expect big games from Hooker and Tillman in particular, with the duo connecting for at-least one touchdown. The Tennessee defense should also make a statement as well, with the Volunteers ultimately winning by at-least three touchdowns Thursday night in Knoxville. Prediction: Tennessee 45, Ball State 10
