In what is a rematch from last season, Mississippi State welcomes Memphis to Starkville to officially kickoff their 2022 SEC Football campaign.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 7-6 season a year ago in what-was year two of the Mike Leach era at Mississippi State. In what-was also the first winning season for Mississippi State under Leach, the Bulldogs owned one of the SEC’s top passing offenses by averaging 378.3 yards per game through the air, and are expected to rank highly in the conference in that category once again this year.

Leading that group is one of SEC Football’s top quarterbacks in Will Rogers, while multiple other offensive names also return in Jo’quavious Marks, Dillon Johnson, Jaden Walley, Austin Williams, and more. The Bulldogs top two leading tacklers from a year ago in Jett Johnson and Nathaniel Watson also return, as do others on the Mississippi State defense such as Emmanuel Forbes.

Memphis on the other hand is coming off a down 2021, a year in which the Tigers finished with a 6-6 overall record. In what-was year two under head coach Ryan Silverfield, the Tigers six wins were Memphis’ lowest since the 2013 campaign, with 2021 also marking their first losing record in AAC play (3-5) since that 2013 season.

The Tigers offense returns a starter at quarterback in Seth Henigan, along with two of their top rushers from a year ago in Brandon Thomas and Rodrigues Clark. Jason Ivory is a notable name set to return at wide receiver, while the Memphis defense should be strong this season, led by one of their leading tacklers from a year ago in Quindell Johnson.
