Coming off a 2021 season in which they were one of SEC Football’s top teams, Ole Miss opens the 2022 campaign with a home matchup against the Troy Trojans.

Finishing with a 10-3 record (6-2 in SEC Football play), Ole Miss as mentioned previously ranked among the tops of the SEC a year ago. Making their first NY6 bowl appearance since 2015, the Rebels also owned one of the conference’s top offenses averaging 33.7 PPG, and now enter 2022 ranked as the No. 21 team in the country.

The Rebels will however have to replace a notable amount of production from last season, in particular on offense where either Luke Altmyer or Jaxson Dart will start at quarterback. Transfers such as Zach Evans, Ulysses Bentley IV, and more will play key roles on offense, while the biggest name returning on defense is likely that of defensive back AJ Finley.

As for Troy, the Trojans are coming off a 5-7 season a year ago, which also happened to be their third consecutive losing campaign. Finishing among the bottom half of the Sun Belt, the Trojans are now set to enter their first season under new head coach Jon Sumrall.

The Trojans offense will feature a returning starter at quarterback in Gunnar Watson, along with multiple other key names from a year ago in Kimani Vidal, Tez Johnson, Jabre Barber, and more. Defensively, Troy’s leading tackler in linebacker Carlton Martial also returns to lead a group that allowed a total of 26.1 PPG to opponents a year ago.

With this game being played in Oxford, this is likely a game where Ole Miss will claim an early lead, and Troy will not be able to keep up offensively. Expect the Rebels to give both Altmyer and Dart a significant number of snaps in this game, and for Ole Miss to cruise to a season opening win over the Trojans. Prediction: Ole Miss 42, Troy 14
