Coming off an exciting first SEC Football season under head coach Shane Beamer, South Carolina officially kicks off their 2022 campaign Saturday night as the Gamecocks host the Georgia State Panthers.

As mentioned previously, South Carolina is coming off a 7-6 season a year ago, the highest win total for the Gamecocks since 2018. This was also the first winning season for South Carolina since that 2018 campaign, with the Gamecocks also finishing 3-5 in SEC Football play a year ago.

Headlining the 2022 roster for the Gamecocks is Oklahoma transfer quarterback Spencer Rattler, who will lead an offense that returns two key pass catchers in Josh Vann and Jaheim Bell. South Carolina’s defense also returns a few notable names such as Brad Johnson, RJ Roderick, and more, while also having added impact transfers such as Devonni Reed.

Georgia State however is coming off arguably their greatest season in program history, one in which the Panthers finished with an 8-5 overall record. Winning their second consecutive bowl game, Georgia State also finished with a 6-2 record in Sun Belt play, which was tied for the third-most wins in conference play a year ago.

The Panthers offense should be strong led by a returning starter at quarterback in Darren Grainger, while Tucker Gregg and Jamyest Williams both also return at running back. Georgia State also returns a notable amount of production at receiver, while each of the Panthers top three leading tacklers on defense return in Jordan Veneziale, Blake Carroll, and Antavious Lane.

While this is a game that South Carolina should win, the Gamecocks however need to be careful facing an experienced Georgia State team, one that gave Auburn troubles a year ago. Expect South Carolina to win as well, as the Gamecocks will pull away late behind a big game from Spencer Rattler. Prediction: South Carolina 31, Georgia State 14
