SEC Football: 4 Biggest Takeaways after Week 1 Games
4. FSU spoils Brian Kelly’s LSU debut
My sleeper pick for this season in the SEC was LSU and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t rooting to be right.
Against Florida State, the story for the Tigers was special teams gaffes.
Special teams mistakes included 2 muffed punts, a blocked field goal, and a blocked extra point that denied LSU a chance at sending the game to OT.
Going 99 yards with just over a minute left to overcome a 14 point lead had to feel great for LSU.
And going into overtime with that much momentum makes you think they could have pulled out the win.
But it didn’t come to fruition and it’s instead one of the more gut wrenching losses I have seen in a while and it showed that expectations should be tempered for the Tigers.
Verdict: LSU will still need time
First off, FSU deserves credit. LSU’s mistakes will be the headline of this game, but Seminoles QB Jordan Travis played phenomenal and don’t write off head coach Mike Norvell just yet.
For LSU, there was certainly some positives in this game.
To even have a chance at the end of the game showed the resolve of this team and that’s something that will benefit them going forward.
Jayden Daniels also seemed like the correct choice for QB1. He put up 100 yards rushing and had 2 passing touchdowns.
Now the Tigers obviously need to clean things up. They were down for pretty much the entire game and their Preseason All-American wide receiver Kayshon Boutte only touched the ball twice.
In 2 weeks LSU faces off against Mississippi State and will need to be better than they were against Florida State.
That game will show us more about where the Tigers will finish this year, but I think for the people like myself, where they finish will be lower than originally predicted.
