12. Auburn Tigers

Previous Ranking: 12

The Tigers, despite not moving in this week’s update, did exactly what they needed to do in week one as Auburn took care of business against Mercer 42-16 to advance to 1-0 on the year. Behind a big game from running back Tank Bigsby on the ground (16 carries, 147 yards, two touchdowns), the Tigers would out-gain Mercer in total yardage 497-291, but would continue the question marks around the quarterback position as starter TJ Finley would throw two interceptions, combined with a strong showing from backup Robby Ashford.

Week 2 of the 2022 SEC Football season could bring about a similar performance from Auburn as well, with the Tigers set to host San Jose State on Saturday night. This is a game that Auburn should win once again, with multiple quarterbacks likely to see time in anticipation of their week three showdown with Penn State.

11. South Carolina Gamecocks

Previous Ranking: 11

While not necessarily as convincing a week one performance as some other teams on this list, South Carolina remains at No. 11 after defeating Georgia State 35-14 at home Saturday night. Advancing to 1-0 on the year, the Gamecocks scored 23 unanswered points in the second half to claim the win, with two key touchdowns coming down the stretch via special teams.

Week 2 for South Carolina however brings a significantly tougher challenge as the Gamecocks will travel for the first time this season to Fayetteville where a matchup with No. 19 Arkansas awaits. The Gamecocks will likely not be favored going in, but should they win, South Carolina could be set for a significant rise in next week’s update.
