By Matt Melton
After beginning SEC Football play with an impressive road win in Gainesville, Kentucky returns home in week three for a matchup with Youngstown State. The first-ever meeting between the two schools, the matchup pits one of the top teams in the SEC East against one of the best in the FCS.
As mentioned previously, Kentucky (2-0, 1-0 in SEC) picked up a notable week two victory as the Wildcats defeated Florida in an early season SEC Football Top 25 showdown, 26-16. A game in which the Wildcats outscored the Gators 13-0 in the second half, Kentucky saw a rise in their ranking as a result of the contest, and now enter week three as the No. 9 team in the AP Poll.
Averaging 31.5 PPG on offense, the Wildcats have gotten strong play from quarterback Will Levis, along with the duo of Dane Key and Tayvion Robinson beginning to emerge as Kentucky’s top two receiving options. Kavosiey Smoke has also impressed at the running back position, having gained 112 yards on 21 carries so far this season.
Defensively, the Wildcats are only allowing 14.5 PPG to opponents across the season’s first two weeks and have four players total in double-figures for tackles. Of that group, linebacker JJ Weaver leads the way with 14 total, while DeAndre Square, Jacquez Jones, and Carrington Valentine are not far behind.
Youngstown State (2-0) on the other hand is also coming off their second-straight win, defeating Dayton at home, 49-16. Already owning a win over Duquesne as well, the Penguins come into this contest ranked as the No. 23 team in the FCS Coaches Poll, with this road trip to Kentucky by far the toughest game on their 2022 schedule.
Averaging 40 PPG, the Penguins offense is led by quarterback Demeatric Crenshaw, along with running back Jaleel McLaughlin who has rushed for a combined 332 yards and four touchdowns across two games. Max Tomczak and Bryce Oliver are also Youngstown State’s top two options at receiver.
On defense, Youngstown State has allowed a combined 15 PPG to opponents, and are led by Quincy Lenton with a team-high 13 tackles. The Penguins defense has also collected a combined five interceptions across two games this season, with Devin Johnson having accounted for two of those himself.
