Defending conference champion Alabama opens SEC Football play Saturday night as the Crimson Tide host the Vanderbilt Commodores in the first meeting between the two since 2017. A game that Alabama won 59-0 in Nashville, the Crimson Tide also hold a combined 59-19-4 advantage in the all-time series between the two, with Vanderbilt’s last win coming back in 1984.

Alabama (3-0) enters SEC play ranked as the No. 2 team in the country, coming off a dominant 63-7 win over UL Monroe a week ago inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. Also owning a home win over Utah State, as well as a road win at Texas, this matchup with Vanderbilt however marks the final contest on the Crimson Tide’s schedule before an important three-straight games against Top 25 opponents.

The Crimson Tide offense comes into this contest averaging 46 PPG, a group led by quarterback Bryce Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner who holds a 9:2 TD:INT this season. Alabama’s ground game is led by the running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and Jase McClellan, while Gibbs also leads the Crimson Tide in receiving, with Traeshon Holden not far behind (12 receptions, 169 yards, 3 TD).

Defensively, Alabama is allowing only 8.7 PPG to opponents (ninth-fewest in nation), a group led by Jaylen Moody and DeMarcco Hellams, both of which have 20+ tackles each. Will Anderson Jr is Alabama’s top pass rusher with 4.5 TFL and two sacks on the year, while Brian Branch, Henry To’oTo’o, and Deontae Lawson are also in double-digit tackles on the year.

Vanderbilt (3-1) on the other hand is also off to a strong start to the season, and are coming off a 38-28 road win over Northern Illinois. Similar to Alabama as well, this is also the SEC opener for the Commodores, one that begins a conference schedule that includes matchups against six ranked teams at the moment.

Averaging 42 PPG on offense, the Commodores are led by two quarterbacks in Mike Wright and AJ Swann, both of which have impressed when on the field so far this season. Vanderbilt also has one of SEC Football’s top receivers up to this point in Will Sheppard (23 receptions, 313 yards, 7 TD), while Jayden McGowan and Re’Mahn Davis are both names to know for the Commodores on offense.

On defense, the Commodores are allowing a combined 28.5 PPG to opponents, with linebacker Anfernee Orji leading the way with a by far team-high 39 tackles. Max Worship and Tyson Russell are also key names for the Commodores, while Vanderbilt kicker Joseph Bulovas, who played at Alabama from 2018-20, has yet to miss a kick this year on special teams.
