With Vanderbilt Football having begun the 2022 season off to a 3-1 start, there are likely a few takeaways that you have seen from the Commodores play so far, especially offensively.
For example, did you know that the Commodores offense is averaging a total of 42 PPG, a number that currently ranks 21st in the nation? What about the fact that Vanderbilt also has the SEC’s top receiver at the moment in Will Sheppard, with the junior leading the conference in receptions, yards, and touchdowns (23 receptions, 313 yards, 7 TD – TD total also leads nation)?
What about the play of running back Re’Mahn Davis as well, with the senior currently ranking top five in numerous statistical categories in the SEC that includes carries, yards, touchdowns, and more?
Yes, it’s clear why Vanderbilt Football has had so much success offensively when looking at those numbers alone. However, a notable amount of the production also goes back to the quarterback position, one where the Commodores have received impressive play this season from both Mike Wright and AJ Swann.
Mike Wright, AJ Swann impressing at quarterback for Vanderbilt Football
Beginning the year as the Commodores starter, Wright would start each of Vanderbilt Football’s first three games. Throwing for 426 yards with a 6:1 TD:INT and a 60 CMP% during that span, Wright would also impress on the ground, rushing for 264 yards and four touchdowns on 32 attempts.
The junior would however not start the Commodores previous game against Northern Illinois, with Swann, a true freshman, drawing the start. Continuing his impressive first collegiate action (29-of-46, 452 yards, 6 TD), Swann would lead the Commodores to the victory, and now appears set as Vanderbilt’s starter going into this Saturday’s matchup at Alabama.
Regardless of who starts this Saturday however, it appears that Vanderbilt has two quarterbacks who are capable of having success in the SEC this season, with this matchup against Alabama as the first test. Can the duo of Wright and Swann continue to lead and carry over what has been an exciting Vanderbilt offense into SEC play?
