Texas A&M Football beat the UMass Minutemen, 20-3. Conner Weigman threw for 191 yards and 1 touchdown. UMass certainly lived up to its reputation as one of the worst teams in college football, having less than 200 total offensive yards. While the Aggies were missing Devon Achane, the offense had yet another horrible day.
Texas A&M Football started off the game with a solid drive. They were able to move the chains through Weigman’s passing plays and backup running back Amari Daniels’ legs to get into field goal range. They were unable to convert in the red zone and had to settle for three.
UMass’s offense didn’t get anything going and had to punt after five plays. The Aggies went back to their usual offensive struggles and gave the ball right back to the Minutemen. On the next possession, UMass put a drive together and got into the red zone. The Aggies defense was able to get a goal-line stop and forced the Minutemen to settle for a tie. It was a 3-3 game, shortly into the second.
On the next drive, A&M would fumble after three plays, and lucky for the Aggies, UMass couldn’t take advantage of the turnover and had to punt. The Aggies would punt the ball after a negative 7 yards on their next drive. UMass would punt the ball right back after three plays. Finally, the scoring drought stopped and Conner Weigman used his legs for a TD.
UMass couldn’t respond and would punt after three plays. Weigman would have another big run but the Aggies would fumble two plays later, as the game was still 10-3 with 2 minutes left to play in the second. UMass’s offense couldn’t take advantage of this, as they had to punt after three plays.
Despite the good field position, the Aggies couldn’t take more than a one-possession lead as they missed a 47-yard field goal. The crowd seemed very empty after halftime. The stadium wasn’t so full to begin with, but I get why fans left as A&M was only beating one of the teams in the country by one possession.
UMass would start off the half by punting the ball after six plays. The Aggies were able to get a drive going behind Amari Daniels’ legs. They were unable to get into the endzone, as they have to settle for three. The game was 13-3, with 7 minutes left in the third. Considering UMass’s offensive production, the game was all but over.
A&M would fumble two more times, and miss a 45-yard field goal, but it didn’t really matter, as no drive for UMass went over 20 total offensive yards for the rest of the game. Texas A&M would score another touchdown in the fourth to make it 20-3 and the Aggies got rid of their losing streak. Honestly, the fans on the stand running and passing a t-shirt to each other were more entertaining than the game.
Texas A&M Football beats UMass in close matchup
For Texas A&M Football, I am really disappointed. The offense was horrible against the worst team in the country. Yes, the Aggies did not have Achane for a second straight week but Arkansas State scored 35 points against this team the week before. Arkansas State! The Aggies’ defense once again showed up and didn’t really allow UMass to get any points.
In all fairness, I was rooting for Texas A&M to lose because I thought it would have been funny. Still, the Aggies didn’t any get brownie points for winning this one the way they did. LSU will probably wipe the floor next week. Harold Perkins Jr will have an all-time stat-line next week.
Texas A&M struggled this year because of their offense. Obviously, Jimbo Fisher should be fired. Due to the amount of buyout money that it would cost to fire him, Jimbo Fisher will still be the coach next year for A&M (most likely not 100 percent).
Yes, they do have a number one ranked 2022 class that should get better this off-season. Additionally, they do have the 24th-ranked class (according to 247 sports) coming in this year. Still, the offense will need upgrades in the play-calling and talent if they want to get to be good, nonetheless, get back to their top-10 preseason ranking.
