A Top 25 SEC Basketball vs. Big Ten showdown, Alabama and Michigan State are set to collide on Thursday night in one of the headline opening matchups of the Phil Knight Invitational.

Off to a strong start to the season, Alabama comes into this contest with a 4-0 overall record, as well as being ranked as the No. 18 team in the country with wins over Longwood, Liberty, South Alabama, and Jacksonville State. Averaging 84.8 PPG offensively, Alabama is also allowing only 57.5 PPG to opponents, while also holding notable averages of a combined 56 RPG and 7.3 BPG as a team, two numbers that currently rank top five nationally (lead nation in rebounds per game).

Leading what is a deep Alabama team is star freshman Brandon Miller at 20.3 PPG and 9.3 RPG on 51.7% shooting from three, while guards Mark Sears and Rylan Griffen are also averaging in double-figures. Freshman forward Noah Clowney is leading the Crimson Tide at 10.5 RPG, while others such as Nimari Burnett and Jaden Bradley are each also averaging 8+ PPG.

Michigan State is also ranked entering this matchup as the No. 12 team in the country, with the 3-1 Spartans coming off back-to-back notable wins over Villanova and Kentucky. The Spartans are also averaging 73.8 PPG while allowing only 66.8 PPG, and come into this contest shooting 44.2% from the field as a team.

The Spartans have three double-digit scorers in Joey Hauser, Tyson Walker, and Malik Hall, each of which are currently averaging 12+ PPG for the year. AJ Hoggard and Mady Sissoko are not far behind those three either, with Jaden Akins, Pierre Brooks, and Jaxon Kohler among the additional names to know for Michigan State.

Alabama vs Michigan State SEC Basketball Prediction

This is undoubtedly Alabama’s toughest test of the 2022-23 season up to this point, meaning that this game will certainly be a lot closer than their previous four wins. As for who wins, I’ll say that the Crimson Tide do however remain unbeaten with a massive win over the Spartans, in part due to another big game from freshman Brandon Miller. Prediction: Alabama 74, Michigan State 69
