By Matt Melton
An SEC Football vs. ACC in-state rivalry matchup, Florida is set to travel to Tallahassee on Friday night for their annual showdown with Florida State. The Gators have won each of the last three meetings between the two dating back to 2018 (did not play in 2020), with Florida having won last seasons game in Gainesville by a final of 24-21.
As for this season, the Gators come into this contest with a 6-5 overall record, as well as a 3-5 mark in SEC Football play. Florida also dropped their most recent contest last week at Vanderbilt by a final of 31-24, which snapped a previous two-game winning streak for the Gators.
Averaging 31.2 PPG, the Gators offense is led by quarterback Anthony Richardson, along with two running backs in Montrell Johnson and Trevor Etienne. Florida also has three top receivers in Justin Shorter, Ricky Pearsall, and Xzavier Henderson, with Daejon Edwards also a name to know.
The Gators defense is allowing 27.3 PPG to opponents, and are led by two top tacklers in Rashad Torrence II and Ventrell Miller, both of which have 70+ tackles on the year. Amari Burney and Princely Umanmielen are the Gators top two pass rushers, while others such as Trey Dean III, Gervon Dexter, and Shemar James are among the names to know.
Florida State however is ranked as the No. 16 team in the country according to the latest College Football Playoff rankings, sporting an 8-3 overall record. The Seminoles also hold a 5-3 mark in ACC play this season, and have won their last four games over the likes of Georgia Tech, Miami, Syracuse, and Louisiana.
The Seminoles offense is averaging a total of 35.4 PPG led by quarterback Jordan Travis, who has thrown for 2,526 yards with a 21:4 TD:INT ratio this season. Florida State also has three additional running backs in Trey Benson, Lawrance Toafili, and Treshaun Ward, along with multiple receivers such as Johnny Wilson, Ontaria Wilson, Mycah Pittman, Camren McDonald, and Kentron Poitier.
On defense, Florida State is one of the top teams in the ACC allowing 18 PPG to opponents, as well as only 293.4 YPG. Headlining the Seminoles defense are two top tacklers in Jammie Robinson and Tatum Bethune, while others such as Jared Verse, Patrick Payton, Kalen DeLoach, and Derrick McLendon II are among the names to know.
Florida vs Florida State Line, Spread, Over/Under
As of Wednesday night, Florida State is a 9.5-point favorite over Florida according to FanDuel, with the over/under at 57.5. The Seminoles are also currently -350, while Florida is +270.
Florida vs Florida State SEC Football Prediction
While Florida has won the last three over the Seminoles, this game could be Florida State’s to lose, especially with it being played in Tallahassee. Anything can certainly happen in a rivalry game such as this, but I’ll say that Florida State defeats the Gators by at-least a touchdown, with the Seminoles defense as a big reason why. Prediction: Florida 24, Florida State 33
