SEC Football well represented during 2022 College Football Awards

With the winners announced Thursday night, SEC football was well represented as expected in this year’s edition of the annual College Football Awards. Who were some of those winners, and which awards did the conference claim Thursday night? (NOTE: The winner of the 2022 Heisman Trophy was not announced Thursday night, and will be announced Saturday night) 

SEC Football well represented during 2022 College Football Awards

Bednarik Award – Alabama OLB Will Anderson Jr. 

After Georgia DL Jordan Davis took home the award a year ago, SEC football went back-to-back to win the Bednarik Award this year with Anderson, who was named the best defensive player in college football. The 2022 SEC Defensive Player of the Year had 51 tackles for the Crimson Tide this season, while also leading the SEC with 17 TFL and 10 sacks. Anderson also claimed both the Nagurski and Lombardi Awards as well.

Biletnikoff Award – Tennessee WR Jalin Hyatt 

After the SEC won the Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s top wide receiver three-straight years from 2018-20, the conference claimed the award once again Thursday night with Hyatt. The Tennessee wideout led the SEC this season with 67 receptions for 1,267 yards, as well leading the nation with 15 touchdowns.

Burlsworth Trophy – Georgia QB Stetson Bennett

After Arkansas LB Grant Morgan won the Burlsworth Trophy for the nation’s top former walk-on a year ago, the SEC went back-to-back this year with Bennett. Also a Heisman Trophy finalist, the senior completed 67.9% of his passes for 3,425 yards and a 20:6 TD:INT ratio this season for the top ranked Bulldogs, while also rushing for seven touchdowns.

Mackey Award – Georgia TE Brock Bowers

Presented to the nation’s top tight end, Bowers was the winner of the 2022 John Mackey Award. The sophomore had 52 receptions this season for 726 yards and six touchdowns, along with three more scores rushing, for the top ranked Bulldogs.
