Ole Miss vs Texas Tech: 2022 Texas Bowl preview, TV schedule
Can the Ole Miss Rebels rebound after three straight losses to win the 2022 Texas Bowl against a very solid Texas Tech team? Will the Rebels be able to continually produce points, as they will need to against a very explosive Red Raiders offense?
TV Schedule: December 28, 2022 at 9:00 P.M. on ESPN
Location: NRG Stadium, Houston, TX
The Ole Miss Rebels are reeling. Three straight losses will do that to you. Things are a lot different for the Rebels since the middle of October when they were 7-0. Yes, the offense fell asleep at the wheel at certain points, but this team was ranked 7th in the country and rolling. Even if they weren’t able to beat Alabama, you could make a reasonable argument that the Rebels would win 11 games this season before bowl season.
That would have been more than last season and given them a realistic chance to avenge their Sugar Bowl loss last season with an equivalent NY6 bowl win (let’s say for now that it would have been the non-playoff bowl, honestly let’s not get into 11-1 loss Ole Miss, Bama SEC title champ, Georgia 10-1 with the only loss to SEC champ Bama playoff argument; it’s just didn’t end up that way at all no use to write about hypotheticals).
Losses started to come as the Rebels’ offense would shut down against LSU in the second half, barely beat the Aggies team that wasn’t good offensively, lost to Bama, got blown out by Arkansas, and then lost to Mississippi State in the Egg bowl.
Lane Kiffin would go through rumors as to whether he would stay as coach of the Rebels, or would move to a bigger program. He would decide to sign an extension, but this back half of the season did not go the way Ole Miss wanted and now they face the Red Raiders in the Texas Bowl.
This bowl game will be a battle of two great offenses. The offense for the Rebels is explosive behind Quinshon Judkins. Judkins has rushed for 1,476 yards on 251 carries for the season. As usual, the Red Raiders have a very explosive passing game. Despite going through three QBs (for various reasons), the Red Raiders have thrown for 310 yards per game.
Ole Miss’ defense isn’t horrible, but isn’t good. I think they end up getting a stop against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders’ defense isn’t horrible, but is going to get zero stops for the entire game. This is an oversimplification but it describes my point here.
A lot of points are gonna be scored in this one, despite the late-show time (on the East Coast) I highly suggest watching this one. This bowl game will be a fun one to watch.
Tyler Shough will be the starting QB for the Red Raiders in this game, as he has been for the last two games. While that might be a weird statement to make, Texas Tech has gone through three QB’s due to injuries, and the QB debate on who is better. Shough ended up winning the debate over Donovan Smith (is transferring) and Behren Morton (waiting in the wings-freshman).
Prediction: Ole Miss: 31 Texas Tech: 28
I really liked watching the Red Raiders this season (okay I just liked the Big 12 as a whole this season). While the Red Raiders’ offense will be explosive, I just can’t pick them to win this game as I don’t feel as confident in their defense. I do think they will have a shot because Ole Miss’ offense does stall at times, and Texas Tech certainly can put up points in a hurry.
Still, I think the Rebels’ offense is better and the Red Raiders will not able to match them all the way through. As they have all season, I think the Rebels will stall at points during this game but this time (unlike some other times) they will be able to get away with the victory.
As already stated, Ole Miss’ defense is somewhat okay and will get stops at some points of this game. The Red Raiders’ defense will not. Again oversimplification of the point made, but still.
The Red Raiders will have a good chance to win this game because this Ole Miss team plays down to its opponents. Still, going into this game I have Ole Miss winning this one. Why this team is in the spot they are in right now is because their offense stalls. Hopefully, they can end the season on a high note with a win in the 2022 Texas Bowl!
