Two teams who last played back in 2004, Tennessee and Clemson are set to meet Friday night in Miami for what is a highly anticipated 2022 Capital One Orange Bowl between a pair of Top 10 teams. The Volunteers and Tigers have faced off a total of 19 times previously, with Tennessee owning an 11-6-2 all-time advantage.

The Volunteers enter this contest ranked as the No. 6 team in the country according to the latest College Football Playoff rankings, and are coming off a 10-2 regular season, one that also included a 6-2 mark in SEC play. After starting the season 8-0, the Volunteers have however split their last four games, with both losses coming on the road at Georgia, 27-13, as well as at South Carolina, 63-38.

The strength for head coach Josh Heupel and Tennessee is undoubtedly the offense, which ranks No. 1 nationally with an average of 47.3 PPG, along with averaging 538.3 YPG. Without starting quarterback Hendon Hooker due to injury, as well as others such as Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman due to opt-out’s, Joe Milton will make the start for the Volunteers, and will have a supporting cast that includes Jabari Small, Jaylen Wright, Bru McCoy, Ramel Keyton, Squirrel White, and more.

The Volunteers defense ranks No. 44 nationally by allowing 23.5 PPG to opponents, and are led in tackles by Aaron Beasley and Trevon Flowers, both of which have 55+ this year. Tennessee’s top pass rusher is Byron Young with five sacks on the year, with others such as Jeremy Banks, Tamarion McDonald, and Jaylen McCollough each having at-least 50 tackles this season.

Clemson, who is ranked right behind Tennessee as the No. 7 team nationally in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, comes into this contest with an 11-2 overall record, as well as off an 8-0 mark in ACC play. A team whose lone losses came at Notre Dame and against South Carolina, the Tigers are also the 2022 ACC Champions, having defeated North Carolina, 39-10, in their most recent game.

The Tigers sport the nation’s No. 25 scoring offense at 34.7 PPG, and will be led by freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik, who takes over as the starter with D.J. Uiagalelei having transferred to Oregon State. Will Shipley and Phil Mafah are the Tigers top two options at running back, while the receiving game will feature names such as Antonio Williams, Joseph Ngata, Davis Allen, Beaux Collins, Jake Briningstool, and Brannon Spector.

Clemson’s defense also ranks No. 19 nationally at 20.1 PPG allowed, but will be without two of their top players in Trenton Simpson and Myles Murphy. Leading the Tigers defensively is Jeremiah Trotter Jr. with 80 tackles and 6.5 sacks, while others such as Barrett Carter, K.J. Henry, Jalyn Phillips, and R.J. Mickens are all among the names to know.

Tennessee vs Clemson 2022 Orange Bowl Prediction

Even though the Volunteers and Tigers will be without multiple key players Friday night, this game should still be one of college football’s best of bowl season up to this point. As to who wins, I’ll say that Clemson beats Tennessee in a back-and-forth game due to a late touchdown in the fourth quarter. Prediction: Tennessee 30, Clemson 35
