The lone SEC team in the College Football Playoff, Georgia begins its’ quest to become the first repeat national champion of the CFP era Saturday, as the Bulldogs face Ohio State in the 2023 CFP Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. An SEC vs. Big Ten showdown, this is only the second meeting between Georgia and Ohio State ever, with the Bulldogs having won the prior contest back in 1993.

Undefeated at 13-0, defending national champion Georgia is ranked as the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff, and is coming off an unbeaten 8-0 mark in SEC play. The Bulldogs are also the 2022 SEC champions, with their biggest wins on the season having come against Tennessee, Oregon, and most recently LSU, whom Georgia defeated 50-30 in the SEC Championship Game.

The Georgia offense currently ranks No. 10 nationally with an average of 39.2 PPG, and are led by quarterback Stetson Bennett, who was a Heisman finalist this season. The Bulldogs will also use three different running backs in Kenny McIntosh, Daijun Edwards, and Kendall Milton, while Brock Bowers, Ladd McConkey, Darnell Washington, and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint are the top receivers.

Defensively, Georgia is one of the nation’s best, allowing only 12.8 PPG to rank No. 2 nationally. Leading the Bulldogs on that side of the ball are names such as Smael Mondon, Jamon Dumas-Johnson, and Jalen Carter in the front seven, along with Malaki Starks, Christopher Smith, and Kelee Ringo in the secondary.

Ohio State is ranked as the No. 4 seed in this year’s College Football Playoff, coming off an 11-1 regular season that included an 8-1 mark in Big Ten play. The Buckeyes lone loss came at home to Michigan in the regular season finale, 45-23, with Ohio State’s best wins this season also coming against Penn State and Notre Dame.

The Buckeyes offense, which ranks No. 2 nationally with 44.5 PPG, is also led by a Heisman finalist at quarterback in CJ Stroud, who has thrown for a 37:6 TD:INT ratio so far this season. Ohio State’s top running back this season has been Miyan Williams, while the Buckeyes receiver corps is as talented as any in the nation, headlined by two 1,000-yard receivers in Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka.

Defensively, Ohio State is allowing 19.2 PPG to rank No. 13 nationally, and are led by linebacker Tommy Eichenburg with a by far team-high 112 tackles. Steele Chambers and Lathan Ransom are also two prominent tacklers for the Buckeyes, while Ohio State’s top pass rushers are Jack Sawyer, Michael Hall Jr., J.T. Tuimoloau, and Zach Harrison.

Georgia vs Ohio State 2023 CFP Semifinal at Peach Bowl Prediction

With this game being played in the Bulldogs’ backyard, combined with the fact that Georgia has been downright dominant at times this season, it’s clear to see why the defending SEC champions are the favorite. This game however certainly has the potential to go either way between two of college football’s heavyweights however, but I’ll say for a prediction that Georgia wins a close one due to a late touchdown. Prediction: Georgia 35, Ohio State 30
