Texas A&M Basketball holds off Auburn at home, 83-78

Texas A&M Basketball defended home court with a 83-78 win over Auburn to complete the season sweep of the Tigers. The Aggies are now 9-2 and off to their best start since joining the Southeastern Conference. The Aggies were led by Wade Taylor IV’s 22 points and 7 assists which allowed the Aggies to move into sole possession of second place in the conference standings.

The Tigers got off good start and were in control of the game early. Auburn got out to a 27-15 lead with just 6:28 left in the first half. Coach Buzz Williams’ team fought back and closed up the gap with a 9-0 run that had the game tied 34-34 before the end of the half. A&M went into halftime with a 37-36 lead.

Auburn looked as if they were going to take control again in the second half and got out to a 49-41 lead at the 15:04 mark. The Aggies would then make a comeback in a game that went back and forth into the last minutes of the game. Texas A&M was able to take 76-74 lead off a Julius Marble jumper with 2:55 left in game and never lost the lead again for the rest of the game.

Auburn received solid performances from their starters, where four of the five scored in double figures. Johni Broome provided 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers. Broome, who is second in the conference with 8.9 rebounds per game, was the game’s leader on the boards. Wendell Green Jr. also had a good game for Auburn leading the team in scoring with 20 points and also led them with 6 assists.

Both teams had similar shooting percentages from the field and neither had a great edge in turnovers or rebounds. The major discrepancy between the two opponents was free throw opportunities. The Tigers only took 14 free throws for the game of which they made 9. The Aggies on the other hand made 31 of 39 from the stripe.

Auburn has lost 4 of its last 5 games and their next game is against hated rival #3 Alabama. If the Tigers don’t turn it around, they could see their NCAA tournament hopes begin to slip away. The game against Alabama will be Saturday, February 11th at 2:00pm on ESPN.

A&M has won 4 of its last 5 contests and are looking like a team that could contend for the SEC title. Their next challenge will be a road game against LSU on Saturday February 11th and can be seen on the SEC Network at 8:30pm.
