Arguably the biggest second round matchup of the 2023 SEC Tournament comes Thursday night in Nashville, as Auburn and Arkansas collide in the 7/10 showdown. The two teams met only once during the 2022-23 season back on January 7 in Auburn, a game in which the Tigers won, 72-59.
Auburn, the No. 7 seed in the 2023 SEC Tournament, is coming off a regular season in which they finished with a 20-11 overall record, as well as a 10-8 mark in SEC play. The Tigers, led by head coach Bruce Pearl, are also coming off a big 79-70 home win over Tennessee in the regular season finale, one that has Auburn currently sitting as a projected No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.
The Tigers come into Thursday averaging 72.7 PPG offensively, while also allowing 66.8 PPG to opponents, and have three double-digit scorers in Johni Broome, Wendell Green Jr., and Jaylin Williams. Auburn also has two other prominent scorers in Allen Flanigan and KD Johnson, both of which are averaging at-least 8+ PPG this season.
As for Arkansas, the Razorbacks, led by head coach Eric Musselman, are the No. 10 seed in the 2023 SEC Tournament coming off a 19-12 regular season, one that also included an 8-10 mark in SEC play. The Razorbacks are also projected as a No. 9 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, and come to Nashville on a three-game losing streak.
Arkansas is currently averaging 74.8 PPG, while also allowing 67.2 PPG, and have four players averaging in double-figures in Ricky Council IV, Nick Smith Jr., Anthony Black, and Davonte Davis. The Razorbacks also have four others playing key roles in the frontcourt in Jordan Walsh, Makhi Mitchell, Jalen Graham, and Makhel Mitchell.
Auburn vs Arkansas 2023 SEC Tournament Prediction
A second round matchup between two NCAA Tournament teams, this game between Auburn and Arkansas could honestly go either way. However, I’ll say that Arkansas pulls away late, with the Razorbacks moving on to face No. 2 seed Texas A&M on Friday. Prediction: Auburn 74, Arkansas 79
