The 2023 NIT officially tips off Tuesday night for the SEC as Vanderbilt hosts Yale for a first round matchup. The Commodores and Bulldogs have only met once on the hardwood previously, which came via a Vanderbilt 79-74 win back in 2015.

Led by SEC Co-Coach of the Year Jerry Stackhouse, Vanderbilt currently sits at 20-14 overall this season, a year that also included an 11-7 mark in SEC play to finish sixth in the conference. Coming off a semifinal run in the SEC Tournament, the Commodores are also one of the hottest teams in the tournament having won 10 of their last 12 games dating back to February 4.

The Commodores are currently averaging 72.5 PPG offensively, while also allowing 72.1 PPG to opponents, and are led by a pair of double-digit scorers in Tyrin Lawrence and Jordan Wright. Ezra Manjon is also a prominent scorer at 9.9 PPG, with Myles Stute, Trey Thomas, Colin Smith, and Quentin Millora-Brown among the additional names to know.

As for Yale, the Bulldogs are currently sitting at 21-8 overall for the year, while also having finished atop the Ivy League during the regular season at 10-4 in conference play. Led by head coach James Jones, the Bulldogs finished one win away from making the NCAA Tournament, with Yale also having won 10 of their last 12 games dating back to January 16.

One of the Ivy League’s most talented teams, Yale is allowing only 63 PPG to opponents, while also averaging 76.2 PPG, and are led by two All-Ivy selections in Matt Knowling and Ed Jarvis. The Bulldogs also have the 2022-23 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year in Bez Mbeng, as well as two other double-digit scorers in John Poulakidas and August Mahoney.

Playing on their homecourt, the pick here goes to Vanderbilt. I’ll say that the Commodores carry over the success from the SEC Tournament to the NIT, with Vanderbilt a team that could easily make a deep run this postseason. Prediction: Vanderbilt 76, Yale 69
