Yet another intriguing Round of 64 matchup at the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Thursday comes in Birmingham, as Auburn and Iowa meet in the 8/9 matchup of the Midwest Region.

Beginning with Auburn, the Tigers, led by head coach Bruce Pearl, enter the NCAA Tournament at 20-12 overall, and are coming off a regular season in which they held a 10-8 record in SEC play to finish seventh in the conference. Now a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers are making their second consecutive March Madness appearance, coming off a year in which they made a second round exit as a two-seed.

Auburn is currently averaging 72.7 PPG offensively, while also allowing 67.1 PPG to opponents, and are one of the nation’s top shot blocking teams at 5.1 per game. The Tigers have four players averaging in double figures in Johni Broome, Wendell Green Jr., Jaylin Williams, and Allen Flanigan, while others such as KD Johnson and Dylan Cardwell are also prominent playmakers for Auburn on both ends of the floor.

As for Iowa, the Hawkeyes, led by head coach Fran McCaffrey, currently sit at 19-13 overall this season, a record that included an 11-9 mark in Big Ten play to finish fifth in the conference. The Hawkeyes are the No. 8 seed in the Midwest Region, and are making their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance after a first round exit a year ago as a No. 5 seed.

The Hawkeyes were one of the Big Ten’s top offensive teams averaging 80.2 PPG this season, as well as being one of the nation’s top teams in assists at 16.6 per game, while also allowing 74.4 PPG to opponents. Leading the Hawkeyes is First Team All-Big Ten selection Kris Murray at 20.4 PPG and 7.9 RPG, while Iowa has multiple other names who all make key impacts such as Filip Rebraca, Tony Perkins, Payton Sandfort, Patrick McCaffrey, and Connor McCaffrey.
