Tennessee vs Duke: Line, Prediction, TV Channel & Live Stream for 2023 NCAA Tournament
By Matt Melton
One of the biggest second round matchups in the 2023 NCAA Tournament takes place Saturday afternoon, as No. 4 seed Tennessee collides with No. 5 seed Duke. A head-to-head matchup in which Duke owns an 8-7 all-time advantage, this is the first meeting between the Volunteers and Blue Devils since 2011, a game in which Tennessee lost, 77-67.
Beginning with a look at Tennessee, the Volunteers advanced to the second round with a 58-55 win over No. 13 seed Louisiana. Led by head coach Rick Barnes, the Volunteers, who are a No. 4 seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament, now sit at 24-10 overall this season, and are making their second consecutive Round of 32 appearance in March Madness.
The Volunteers are the nation’s No. 3 defensive team allowing only 57.9 PPG to opponents, while also averaging 71.4 PPG on the offensive end, as well as ranking No. 9 nationally with 16.9 APG. Tennessee has three top scorers in Santiago Vescovi, Olivier Nkamhoua, and Josiah-Jordan James, while others such as Julian Phillips, Tyreke Key, Uros Plavsic, Jonas Aidoo, and Jahmai Mashack all play key roles as well.
Duke, who were the ACC Tournament champions, advanced to the second round with a big 74-51 win over No. 12 seed Oral Roberts on Thursday. Led by head coach Jon Scheyer, the Blue Devils, who are a No. 5 seed, now sit at 27-8 overall for the year, and are making their second-straight Round of 32 appearance in as many years.
The Blue Devils are one of the ACC’s top defensive teams allowing only 63.6 PPG to opponents, while also averaging 72.6 PPG offensively led by the 2022-23 ACC Freshman of the Year Kyle Filipowski at 15.1 PPG and 9 RPG. Duke also has one other double-digit scorer in Jeremy Roach, as well as others that make key impacts such as Tyrese Proctor, Mark Mitchell, Dariq Whitehead, Ryan Young, and Dereck Lively II among others.
Tennessee vs Duke Line, Spread, Over/Under
As of Friday afternoon, Duke is a 3.5-point favorite over Tennessee, with the Blue Devils at -152, while the Volunteers are +126 according to FanDuel. The over/under is 127.5.
Tennessee vs Duke 2023 NCAA Tournament Prediction
While a Tennessee win is certainly a possibility here also, the pick to advance to the Sweet 16 goes to Duke. In what could very easily be the game of the day Saturday, I’ll say that the Blue Devils pull away late in the contest, and win a close, low-scoring second round matchup. Prediction: Tennessee 62, Duke 66
