Alabama Football: 3 storylines to follow during 2023 spring game
By Matt Melton
Coming off an 11-2 season in which they missed the College Football Playoff for only the second time ever, we are set to get our first look at the 2023 version of Alabama football on Saturday, as the Crimson Tide play their annual A-Day spring game from Tuscaloosa.
Here are three storylines that you should be following in particular this Saturday, each of which could be a key factor toward the Crimson Tide’s success this fall.
3 storylines to follow during Alabama football’s 2023 spring game
Quarterback
Arguably the SEC’s most intriguing quarterback competition this offseason comes in Tuscaloosa, where Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson are competing for the starting job to replace two-year starter Bryce Young. This will certainly be one of the biggest talking points going into, as well as coming out of, Saturday, and it will be intriguing to see if either Milroe or Simpson take advantage of the spring game, and potentially become the frontrunner in a competition that is close between two talented quarterbacks.
Safety
Alabama lost both starting safeties from a year ago in Jordan Battle and DeMarcco Hellams, as well as another prominent name in the secondary in Brian Branch. You could certainly make an argument that safety will be the position to watch for on the defensive side of the ball Saturday, with numerous different names such as Malachi Moore, Caleb Downs, DeVonta Smith, Kristian Story, and more likely to be among the biggest talking points.
Inside Linebacker
Another position that will be a big talking point on defense comes at inside linebacker, where the Crimson Tide are tasked with replacing two key names in Henry To’oTo’o and Jaylen Moody. With potential starter Deontae Lawson out for the spring due to injury, the Crimson Tide’s spring game will likely feature multiple names who are competing for a starting spot at inside linebacker such as Georgia transfer Trezmen Marshall, Justin Jefferson, Jihaad Campbell, and Kendrick Blackshire among others.
