Ty Simpson
Simpson is largely unknown to the college football world compared to Milroe as he wasn’t the QB tapped to start against A&M last season.
To the national audience, he certainly didn’t garner as much attention, but to the Alabama football faithful, they know what the former 5-star recruit is supposed to be.
As a freshman he played in four games last year completing 4 of 5 passes for 35 yards. And as spring camp was underway, it was clear he would challenge to be QB1.
Since last year, Simpson has put on 20 pounds and despite not beating out Milroe for the No. 2 spot last spring, he has kept it close this spring.
Simpson is a former 5-star recruit who came in with high expectations and this offseason has been his first chance to take the next step.
But unfortunately for Simpson, he also had his fair share of struggles in the spring game.
Through the air he had a 46% completion percentage (12 of 26) while throwing an interception and accounting for 0 touchdowns.
He did lead the team in rushing (58 yards) and had the longest pass completion of the day with a 57 yard bomb.
But for the Simpson faithful, it was discouraging.
The running was a nice sight to see, but Milroe still has him beat in that department. And the interception along with no touchdowns definitely hurt his stock.
Now this isn’t to say Simpson is out of it, or even behind in the race.
It’s tough to really tell especially with Buchner transferring in. And it should be noted that he has made significant improvements from last spring.
But he, along with Milroe, didn’t do enough for the coaching staff to feel confident enough in what they already had, which is pretty significant.
