Alabama Football’s 2023 quarterback depth chart: A closer look
The Young(er) Guys
Many things are true of Nick Saban. One of them is that he won’t be afraid to start a freshman over the older, returning players if they have earned it and won over the locker room.
Going into the spring, that seemed like something that could end up happening, or at least be discussed.
After the spring it seems less likely, especially with Tyler Buchner arriving through the transfer portal.
But the freshman quarterbacks are still worth mentioning because you never know what could happen by mid-season, injuries and all.
Dylan Lonergan
Lonergan is 4-star early enrollee freshman who committed to the Tide last July.
Contrary to my earlier sentiment that it might be more of a two-man race (not counting Buchner) rather than four, Lonergan did have the best showing in the spring game.
He threw for 79 yards on 8 of 14 passing and added a touchdown. He was also the only quarterback not to throw an interception.
It was certainly an interesting development that caught the eye of some frustrated Tide fans.
Lonergan didn’t seem too affected by the high winds (20-30 mph) and that level of quarterback play is exactly what fans would like to see.
He certainly helped his case. And if he’s not in the running for QB1 anymore, QB2 might be on the table considering the positive hype he built from A-Day.
Eli Holstein
Holstein is also an early enrollee freshman looking to find his place in the crowded QB room.
Admittedly, he is probably fifth on the depth chart currently but as a true freshman that is nothing to be ashamed of.
Despite having committed just last May, Holstein’s body is ready for the next level.
He stands at 6-foot-4-inches, weighs in at 222 pounds, and was a consensus four star recruit as well.
Holstein got his chance in the spring game but wasn’t able to shine like his fellow freshman. He went 3 of 6 for 61 yards and an interception.
Depending on how the QB1 battle shakes out come fall, Holstein’s stock could rise if he makes improvements and some guys transfer out.
But for now, it looks like he’ll be 5th come season’s open.
