Announced on Thursday afternoon by commissioner Greg Sankey, here are five things you need to know surrounding the conference scheduling for the 2024 SEC football season when the SEC adds both Texas and Oklahoma to move to 16 teams.

5 things to know about 2024 SEC Football conference scheduling

1. Each SEC team will play a total of 8 conference games

A debate that was often talked about recently, each SEC team will play a total of eight conference games during the 2024 season, rather than nine. The only SEC schools who voted for the nine-game conference schedule were Florida, Georgia, LSU, Missouri, and Texas A&M, with both Texas and Oklahoma also supporting nine conference games, but did not have a vote according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy.

2. There will be no divisions during the 2024 season

In addition to those eight conference games, there will be no SEC East and West divisions during the 2024 season. The matchup for the SEC Championship game will be determined by the two teams with the best overall record in conference play, rather than the game pitting the winner of the SEC East against the winner of the SEC West.

3. Each SEC team will have to play at-least one Power-5 non-conference game

During the 2024 season, every SEC team will be required to play at-least one game against a non-conference, Power-5 opponent.

4. Contract just for the 2024 season

At the moment, the three prior points all apply solely for the 2024 SEC football season, but could eventually change for 2025 and beyond in the future.

5. 2024 SEC schedule to be released on June 14

Lastly, we will not have to wait very long to know just who the eight conference opponents are for each SEC team. That is because the 2024 SEC schedule will be released on June 14 live on the SEC Network.
