SEC Football: Predicting the biggest rivalries over the next 10 years
By Matt Melton
When both Oklahoma and Texas officially join SEC football in 2024, it will likely mark the return of a few rivalries that were some of the sport’s best at one point in time, as well as create a few new rivalry matchups as well. So, why not take a look ahead, and predict what will be some of the top SEC football rivalries across the next 10 years.
Predicting SEC football’s biggest rivalries over the next 10 years
Alabama vs. Auburn
A rivalry that dates back to 1893 on the gridiron, one in which Alabama currently holds a 49-37-1 all-time advantage over in-state rival Auburn, “The Iron Bowl” will absolutely be going nowhere in the next 10 years.
Oklahoma vs. Texas
Certainly the biggest inherited rivalry for the conference with the addition of Oklahoma and Texas, “The Red River Showdown” between the Sooners and Longhorns will likely not be going anywhere either.
Alabama vs. Tennessee
“The Third Saturday in October” between Alabama and Tennessee has been one of the sports top rivalries since its’ inception back in 1901, and will likely only get even better going forward due to the recent resurgence of the Volunteers program under head coach Josh Heupel.
Texas vs. Texas A&M
One of college football’s greatest rivalries returns with the addition of Texas to the SEC, as Texas A&M and the Longhorns have not met on the gridiron since 2011.
Florida vs. Georgia
Another prominent SEC football rivalry, there is a chance that the location in which Florida/Georgia is played may change in the future, but the matchup between the Gators and Bulldogs should not be going anywhere.
Alabama vs. LSU
Across the last decade-plus, it feels like anytime that Alabama and LSU have met on the gridiron that it was one of college football’s top games from that season, and that fact will likely remain going forward.
Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss
An in-state rivalry between Mississippi State and Ole Miss that dates back to 1901, “The Egg Bowl” is another mainstay conference matchup that will not be going anywhere either.
Auburn vs. Georgia
“The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry” dates back to 1892, and should continue to be one of the SEC’s best across the next decade-plus.
Georgia vs. Tennessee
As for the final matchup on this list, don’t be surprised if Georgia and Tennessee, who have played every season since 1992, becomes one of the conference’s top rivalries across the next 10 years due to the resurgence of the Volunteers.
