For a team that is tasked with replacing their top two starters from last season in Paul Skenes and Ty Floyd, LSU baseball has landed what is likely to be a significant addition via the transfer portal in Luke Holman.

Holman, a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher, joins the defending national champions from within the SEC at Alabama, where he has spent each of the last two seasons.

Looking at that sample size as well, Holman originally came to Alabama prior to the 2022 season out of Wilson High School in Pennsylvania. Not only was Holman one of Pennsylvania’s top right-hander’s in that class, but he was also one of the state’s top players regardless of position, and was selected in the 20th round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays prior to attending Alabama.

As a freshman, Holman would pitch entirely out of the Crimson Tide’s bullpen, making a total of 15 appearances for Alabama. During that span, which was also 19 IP, the right-hander would post an 0-2 record with a 5.68 ERA and a 24:8 K:BB ratio, with opponents also owning a combined .305 AVG against.

Revisiting this past season however, Holman would enjoy a big breakout campaign in Tuscaloosa a year ago, which originally began as Alabama’s mid-week starter, but concluded as the Friday night starter.

With 15-of-16 appearances having been starts, Holman would post a 7-4 record last season with a 3.67 ERA and an 87:31 K:BB ratio across 81 IP. Also holding opponents to a combined .186 AVG against, Holman’s two-year stats now sit at a 4.05 ERA across his 100 IP with the Crimson Tide, while also owning a solid 111:39 K:BB ratio.

Looking ahead to his potential impact with LSU baseball, Holman will be entering his junior year with the Tigers, and should have a big impact during the 2024 season for the defending national champions. As to what that will look like, Holman should be a weekend starter for the Tigers at-the-least, likely coming either on Friday or Saturday night, and is certainly a name to watch for in the 2024 MLB Draft.
