By Matt Melton
After having transferred from Michigan last offseason, Jordan Morant would appear in 13 games for Mississippi State football during the 2023 season. A redshirt junior who now enters his second season in Starkville, what might the 2023 campaign look like for Morant?
Mississippi State Football 2023 Season Preview: S Jordan Morant
As mentioned previously, Morant originally began his collegiate career at Michigan, where he was a member of the Wolverines 2020 recruiting class. Morant was one of the headline names of that class, rated as a four-star safety out of Bergen Catholic (NJ).
Once at Michigan, Morant would go on to redshirt his freshman season with the Wolverines, which was followed by appearing in nine games primarily on special teams in 2021, making one tackle as a redshirt freshman. At the conclusion of those two seasons, Morant would go on to transfer from Michigan, where he would eventually commit to Mississippi State.
During what was his first season at Mississippi State last year, Morant would appear in 13 games for the Bulldogs primarily in a reserve role, where he would finish the fall with 11 tackles.
Now entering his redshirt junior season at Mississippi State, could a breakout 2023 campaign now potentially be in the works for Morant this fall?
Mississippi State S Jordan Morant 2023 Season Prediction: 30 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 2 PD
To answer that question, Morant is likely set for a breakout season in the Bulldogs secondary, one that should include career-high’s in multiple statistical categories. However, the manner in which that breakout season happens is still likely to be determined.
Morant is one of multiple names in the Mississippi State secondary expected to see time in 2023, one that however has to replace a noteworthy amount of production at safety. In addition to the Michigan transfer, names such as Shawn Preston, Marcus Banks, and Corey Ellington are likely to compete for starting spots this fall as well.
Regardless of whether he starts or not though, Morant is still likely to play a noteworthy role in the Bulldogs secondary this season, and should be a key reserve for Mississippi State football at safety at-the-least.
