The constant debate all off-season for Alabama football fans and much of the country has been who will be the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide this upcoming season. The main two names that have consistently emerged in conversation are junior Jalen Milroe and sophomore Ty Simpson.

Milroe has seen more game action than Simpson getting a start last year against Texas A&M where he led the Tide to a 24-20 victory against the Aggies throwing for 111 yards, rushing for eighty-one with three touchdowns and one interception. Simpson was third-string last season and saw limited action late in games.

Each backed up Bryce Young who left the Crimson Tide this past year for the NFL opening up the number one quarterback spot.

Who will be Alabama football’s starting quarterback in 2023?

The discussion and speculation for who will replace Young started during the 2022 season as it was speculated at that time that Young would be leaving Alabama to go pro knowing he would be a high draft pick. Both Milroe and Simpson were on the roster at that time, yet the competition still hasn’t been decided – or has it?

“Locked On Bama” Podcast co-host, Jimmy Stein, attended Alabama’s open practice and stated on the podcast that “there was an order in terms of who was with the one group the most. That was clearly Jalen Milroe.”

Stein went on to say that he noticed the following during warm-ups that he considers to be of note:

  • Jalen Milroe took snaps from presumed first team center, Seth McLaughlin
  • Ty Simpson took snaps from Darrian Dalcourt
  • Tyler Buchner took snaps from James Brockermyer

Stein also went on to say, “As the practice went through the day, you could tell the order in terms of who got the most reps with the first groups and second groups and third groups.”

Although Stein mentioned there was times that the other quarterbacks played with the first group in certain situations, it is clear from what he saw that Milroe was the number one.

Although Alabama football head coach Nick Saban is known for not coming out and saying who his starting quarterback is before taking the field for the first game, it could really be as simple as who was taking snaps with the first team center in practice.

Could that change? Absolutely. Players can improve, digress or the needs of the team can take precedent to alter who is best suited as the starter. Right now, however, based on Stein’s information, I think it is safe to say that it is Milroe’s job to lose. So do not be surprised if he takes the field as the starter for Alabama’s week one game against Middle Tennessee State.
