Week 1 is here! While AJ Swann and Vanderbilt got the party started for the SEC with a win over Hawaii in Week 0, the rest of the conference will get their seasons underway this weekend. There’s a lot of new faces at quarterback this season in the SEC after the conference had five QB’s selected in the 2023 NFL Draft (including 2 of the top 4 picks and 3 of the top 33).
However, that does not mean that the conference is void of talent at the position. This figures to be another strong group of signal callers in the Southeastern Conference with a strong mixture of returning vets and talented new starters. While we don’t know who everyone’s starting QB will be, we have plenty enough to get started what will be our weekly SEC Quarterback Power Rankings. This ranking will take into account previous performances, season totals, plus some future projections all mixed into one. This ranking will be updated weekly following the conclusion of that weekends games. Without any further ado, here are my 2023 Preseason SEC Quarterback Power Rankings.
SEC Quarterback Power Rankings: Daniels, Jefferson on top in Preseason
10. Conner Weigman (Texas A&M)
After splitting the QB duties for the Aggies a year ago with Haynes King and Max Johnson, Conner Weigman is now ready to step into the spotlight as A&M’s QB of the future (and present). In his freshman season, the former five-star completed 55.3% of his passes for 896 yards and 8 TD’s to 0 INT’s across five games. He also ran for 97 more yards.
Weigman and the Aggies open up the season in Week 1 with New Mexico at home on Saturday. The game will start at 7:00 pm Eastern on ESPN in a game that A&M will be heavily favored in, and it’s a game that Weigman will have an opportunity to play well in and get some confidence under his belt.
9. AJ Swann (Vanderbilt)
Our lone SEC quarterback who has played a game so far is Vandy starter AJ Swann. Swann and the Commodores knocked off Hawaii 35-28 on Saturday night in a weather delayed Week 0 affair. Swann was efficient on the night, going 19/30 for 258 yards and 3 TD’s (0 INT’s). Swann played in 9 games a year ago for Vandy (making 7 starts), as he went for a 58.1% completion percentage, 1,274 yards, 10 TD’s, and 2 INT’s.
Vanderbilt will return to action in Week 2 against FCS Alabama A&M on Saturday night also at 7:00 pm Eastern. This is another game that could allow Swann to play well, while not playing the entire game.
