Texas A&M was able to beat New Mexico, 52-10, in a game where Conner Weigman shined. Weigman ended up with 236 yards and 5 touchdowns. Evan Stewart had 8 receptions on his way to 118 yards for the entire game.

Yes, it is a game against New Mexico. Still, you kind of have to take your wins where you can get them with this offense. This is an offense last year that struggled at UMass late in the season. With all due respect to the players and staff at UMass, the Massachusetts school was one of the worst football teams in the country.

Also, Texas A&M did follow up the next weekend with a surprising 38 points against LSU, but clearly, the offense was a problem for the Aggies last season. While this win doesn’t quell concerns about the offense improving under Bobby Petrino and Conner Weigman, they certainly didn’t start any.

What can Texas A&M fans take away from this game?

Texas A&M started out slow in this game but completely cooked in the second quarter. The Aggies ended up with 28 points in the second quarter. A year ago, this would be completely unrealistic. Yes, the opponent is a team that isn’t up to their talent level. Still, for an offense like this, baby steps are required. Saturday, those baby steps were taken.

The next test and (real one) for this offense will be against Miami. The Hurricanes aren’t world-beaters on the defensive end by any means but this is a school that is solid on that side of the ball.

If Weigman is able to control the offense to be at least serviceable, then the Aggies could aim for 8 wins at the very least this season. I kind of have to see it before I believe when it comes to A&M even beating someone like Ole Miss but eight of these games are on their schedule and can be very winnable.

For a team that didn’t even make a bowl game last season, that is a considerable improvement. Still, this is getting a bit ahead of ourselves. As a team, it was impressive to see an Aggies offense that could run itself. For a school that couldn’t really do that at all last season, that would be ideal and nice to see.

Next. Texas A&M has never played these FBS teams. dark
