3 Up’s, 3 Down’s from Georgia’s 49-21 Win Over UAB
Georgia cruised on Saturday night to a 49-21 win over UAB in their final non-conference game for a while. Georgia improved to 4-0 (1-0 SEC) on the year with the win, and I will now look at 3 Up’s (positives) and 3 Down’s (negatives) from the win over the Blazers.
3 up’s, 3 down’s from Georgia’s 49-21 win over UAB
Up – Brock Bowers
Truth be told, it had been a so-so start to the season for Bowers (compared to his normal standards). Bowers had “just” 13 catches, 135 receiving yards, and 1 rushing TD on the season. Those aren’t bad numbers by any means for a tight end through three games (in which he didn’t play the full game in two of them), but they are not numbers we are used to seeing from the nation’s best TE.
That changed on Saturday. Bowers went off to the tune of 9 catches, 121 receiving yards, and 2 TD’s in the win over UAB as Georgia got him the ball early and often. Included in that total were two impressive runs after the catch in which he threw a defender off of him in one of them and then shrugged off a defender while juking another one at the same time during a 41-yard touchdown reception.
Bowers now has season totals of 22 catches, 256 receiving yards, and 3 total TD’s through four games and appears to be hitting his stride heading into full-on SEC play. Georgia would do well for a key component of their gameplan each week to get Bowers involved a lot.
Down – Allowing the TD right before the half
While Georgia was already up 28-7 and still ended up winning big, allowing the 2-minute touchdown drive to UAB right before the half was not ideal. Georgia scored a TD of their own with 1:20 remaining to make it a 28-7 game, and it looked like Georgia had broken away. UAB then went 9 plays in 1:18 to score and trim the lead right back to 14 heading into the half.
Included in the drive was a 19 yard completion down the sideline on a 50/50 ball that put UAB inside the 5, plus a 19 yard run from UAB QB Jacob Zeno. While TD drives will happen, Georgia can’t allow a big momentum shift like this to happen right before the half. The Dawgs had just scored and it looked like they would cruise into halftime, but then they gave momentum right back to UAB (especially considering UAB was getting the ball coming out of the half).
The good news however is that this allows teachable moments for Kirby and the Georgia coaching staff to help make sure that this does not happen in a bigger/closer game when it really could come back to haunt Georgia.
