3 Up’s, 3 Down’s from Georgia’s 49-21 Win Over UAB
Up – Warren Brinson
While he didn’t play a ton down the stretch, Warren Brinson dominated the game early on. Brinson ended up with 3 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 INT in the game, but he was constantly in the backfield. With Mykel Williams out due to illness, Brinson stepped up as the playmaker along the defensive front.
While Brinson might not have the star power of previous Georgia defensively lineman like Jordan Davis or Jalen Carter, he has turned into a dependable veteran up front. Brinson was not just dependable, but was a difference maker in the 1st half on Saturday.
If Brinson can keep playing like this to go along with the return of Mykel Williams, that should bode very well for the Bulldogs front seven.
Down – Health
While this seems overly repetitive from previous up’s and down’s lists and did not really take any big hits during the UAB game, health continues to be a major issue for the Dawgs. Again, Georgia is currently down their #1 WR, three of their top 4 RB’s, their starting Right Tackle, and several key contributors on defense (Javon Bullard, Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, among others), plus as previously mentioned Mykel Williams missed this game due to illness (but should be good to go moving forward).
If you want to see an affect that injuries had on the UAB game, look no further than the running back position. Outside of Daijun Edwards (who had 12 carries for 66 yards), every player that played RB on Saturday was either a walk-on or a receiver. The walk-on trio of Cash Jones, Sevaughn Clark, and Andrew Paul combined for 15 carries (for 66 yards and 1 TD), plus Dillon Bell got another 3 carries (for 22 yards) as he continues to line up all over the field.
Georgia will hope to start getting some of those pieces back heading into the Auburn game as Ladd McConkey will return to practice and hopes to play on Saturday (depending on how this week goes). Mykel Williams should hopefully also be good to go moving forward as well. Kendall Milton and Roderick Robinson are questionable.
While the depth and development that comes from youngsters and backups playing, it has partially been the reason that Georgia has not gotten into a flow in certain places and has struggled at times. While the Bulldogs won’t be fully healthy at any point this season, the Dawgs could use getting a couple of guys back heading into 7 straight games of SEC play.
Georgia will take on one of their biggest rivals on Saturday as they travel to take on Auburn on Saturday at 3:30 Eastern.
