One of the headline matchups of the 2023-24 ACC/SEC Challenge takes place Wednesday night in Chapel Hill, as Tennessee travels to face North Carolina in a Top 25 showdown. A matchup that the Tar Heels have owned historically, Tennessee however won the most recent meeting between the two back in 2021 by a final score of 89-72.

Led by head coach Hubert Davis, North Carolina is currently ranked as the nation’s No. 17 team in the latest AP Poll, and are sitting at 5-1 overall for the year. The Tar Heels’ lone loss came against Villanova on a neutral court in overtime, while North Carolina also owns’ victories over the likes of Radford, Lehigh, UC Riverside, Northern Iowa, and Arkansas.

North Carolina is currently one of the ACC’s top offensive teams by averaging 85.3 PPG, and have four players averaging in double-figures, three of which are seniors in RJ Davis, Armando Bacot, and Cormac Ryan, with the other being sophomore forward Harrison Ingram. Allowing 69 PPG to opponents as well, North Carolina is also one of the nation’s top teams when it comes to getting to the free throw line, and have a few others to know such as Elliot Cadeau, Jalen Washington, and Seth Trimble.

Led by head coach Rick Barnes, Tennessee is currently ranked as the nation’s No. 10 team in the latest AP Poll, and are sitting at 4-2 overall for the year. After beginning the season with four wins in a row over Tennessee Tech, Wisconsin, Wofford, and Syracuse, Tennessee has lost two-straight entering Wednesday against both Purdue and Kansas, which are two of the nation’s top teams.

The Volunteers are one of the SEC’s top defensive teams allowing only 61.5 PPG to opponents, as well as also being among the conference’s best in free throw shooting at 77.7% from the line. Led by two double-digit scorers in Dalton Knecht and Jordan Gainey, the Volunteers are averaging 73.7 PPG, and have an experienced roster also featuring the likes of Josiah-Jordan James, Santiago Vescovi, Jonas Aidoo, Jahmai Mashack, and Zakai Zeigler.

North Carolina vs. Tennessee Line, Spread, Over/Under

As of Tuesday, November 28, North Carolina is a 1.5-point favorite against Tennessee according to FanDuel, with the over/under at 142.5. The Tar Heels sit at -122, while Tennessee is at +102.

Not only is this matchup between two Top 25 teams, but both the Tar Heels and Volunteers are very experienced. However, in what should be a lower-scoring contest, I’ll say that North Carolina comes away with the close victory on their homecourt. Prediction: North Carolina 67, Tennessee 63
