Losing is never a good thing, or is it? Let us take a look at the 2015 Alabama national championship team. The Tide lost at home in Tuscaloosa to the Ole Miss Rebels in week three of the 2015 season before winning their last 12 games to claim Nick Saban’s fourth National Championship. In fact, under Saban, the Tide only went undefeated Twice in Saban’s 17 years at the school.

It is not common to go undefeated in the SEC

In addition to Saban’s two undefeated seasons, there has only been four undefeated SEC teams since 1993 which include the Alabama Crimson Tide (2009 & 2020), Georgia Bulldogs (2022) and Tennessee Volunteers 1998). With that being stated, this is just one of the reasons the LSU Tigers should look at the glass half full despite a disappointing week one loss to the USC Trojans in Las Vegas.

LSU tested themselves early

While outsiders may view the Tigers as one of the only teams in the SEC to lose in week one, it should not be lost on anyone that they were one of only four teams to play a ranked opponent. And sometimes testing yourself early allows you to learn your weaknesses before any other team does, which can help you in the long run.

LSU has a chance to build momentum

The Tigers’ next four opponents are Nicholls State,  South Carolina, UCLA and South Alabama. While two of these teams in South Carolina and UCLA are power four programs and presumably the only real challenges to the Tigers, both programs are struggling mightily right now. If this indeed holds true throughout the next four weeks, the Tigers could be 4-1 with a lot of momentum heading into their contest against the Ole Miss Rebels.

It is better to be humbled early than late

Knowing what to work on is paramount for both the Tigers’ coaching staff and players. And losses often times help you to realize that more than wins. The fact that the Tigers lost a contest in week one may not actually be to their detriment.

While almost all other teams in the SEC are riding high off of wins right now, they also are not necessarily as mindful of their weaknesses that will inevitably be exposed in the form of a loss from what history tells us. And that loss is much better to come early than late in a lot of cases. The Tigers have had that luxury. Moving forward, let us see what they can do with it.
