Alabama Basketball: Tide Land 5-Star Forward Derrion Reid
Alabama basketball added to one of the nation's top 2024 recruiting classes as they picked up a commitment from 5-star forward Derrion Reid out of Prolific Prep (Napa, CA) on Friday afternoon.
The 6'7, 180 pound forward chose Alabama over Georgia and Florida State. Reid is the No. 14 ranked overall player, the No. 3 ranked Power Forward, and the No. 1 ranked player in the state of California in the class according to the 247 composite.
5-star PF Derrion Reid commits to Alabama
Reid is a consensus 5-star recruit and a consensus top 25 player in the class across every major recruiting platform. ESPN ranks him the highest as the No. 9 player in the class, while Rivals is the lowest at No. 22. As previously mentioned, the 247 composite ranks him 14th in the class, while the On3 industry ranking has him 12th.
Reid is originally from Grovetown, Georgia, but moved to California to play at national powerhouse Prolific Prep for his senior season. Georgia was pushing hard to land their former in-state prospect, but Nate Oats was able to edge out the Dawgs.
One of the biggest questions for Reid at the next level will be whether he plays on the wing or plays Power Forward. He's an improving 3-point shooter, and whether he can turn that into a strength might determine his positional placement at the next level. Nevertheless, he is a long player who shows the ability to be a good defender and rebounder. He can also score at multiple levels.
Reid is teammates at Prolific Prep with his future Alabama teammate and fellow Five-Star Aiden Sherrell. Sherrell ranks as the No. 21 player in the class according to the 247 composite.
The two teammates are joined by 4-star Naas Cunningham (No. 49 ranked player in the class) in Alabama's 2024 class. So, two of the Tide's pledges so far in the 2024 class are at Prolific Prep. Not just that, all three currently come out of the state of California, as Cunningham plays for Southern California Academy in Castaic, CA. That gives Alabama 3 of the top 6 recruits out of the state of California in the 2024 class.
Sherrell and Cunningham have both already officially signed with Alabama. Reid has not yet, and it's unclear on when he plans to do so officially.
Alabama now sits well inside the top 10 in the 2024 class rankings as Nate Oats continues to build a perennial contender in the SEC.
