Auburn Football makes headlines with monumental recruiting weekend
The Auburn Tigers had a historic weekend on the recruiting front following their “Big Cat Weekend” as they received five commitments over the weekend. To put this in perspective, previous head coach Bryan Harsin only hosted two players total for “Big Cat Weekend” in 2021.
Current Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze is going into his second season on the plains, and has now bolstered the Tigers into the top six of the recruiting rankings according to On3.
Who are the biggest commitments for Auburn from this past weekend?
Antonio Coleman ( Defensive Lineman)
Coleman ranks as the nations 12th best defensive lineman out of Saraland High School in Saraland, Alabama. Saraland is a 6A state power and is the same school as current Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams.
Coleman initially committed to the Tigers this year before flipping to the Tide, and now flipping back. If Coleman holds firm, this is a big get for the Tigers that could be a plug and play on the defensive line when he arrives in 2025.
Anquon Fegans (Safety)
Fegans was projected to be leaning towards Auburn, so this one is not necessarily a surprise, but a great confirmation when he committed. Fegans ranks as the fifth safety in the class of 2025 and fourth best prospect in the state of Alabama.
His brother, Tre’Quon Fegans actually started his career at Alabama, before transferring to USC and now UCF.
Derick Smith (Athlete)
This is arguably the biggest commitment for the Tigers over the weekend as Smith ranks as the 52nd ranked player nationally and third best athlete in the class of 2025. The Thompson High School product was part of the 7A state runner-up squad in 2023.
Smith is thought to be either a defensive back or a wide receiver at the next level.
How have Hugh Freeze's recruiting classes ranked historically?
The highest Freeze ever finished during his time as head coach at Ole Miss was sixth, and it took him five recruiting cycles to get there. If Freeze keeps on this pace for the Tigers, things could change quickly for the program.
