Mississippi State Wins Governor Cup in Rival Game vs Ole Miss

The Mississippi State Bulldogs took down the Ole Miss Rebels to win the Governor's cup. Let's recap this big rivalry game.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs took on the Ole Miss Rebels in a battle for the Governer's cup. This annual matchup was a close game until the eighth inning when the Bulldogs came out in front to take the win.

Pico Kohn got the start for Mississippi State and had a solid outing. In four innings pitched, Kohn struck out five batters and allowed four hits, no walks, and one earned run. Karson Ligon, Cam Schuelke, Tyler Davis, and Tyson Hardin all threw scoreless frames. Davis got the win in relief.

Grayson Saunier got the start for Ole Miss and had a great outing. In four innings pitched, Saunier struck out two batters and allowed four hits, one walk, and no runs. The Rebels used seven pitchers in relief. JT Quinn and Josh Mallitz both threw scoreless innings and Mason Morris was tagged with the loss.

The scoring began in the second inning with a solo home run from Judd Utermark to put the Rebels in front with a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Bulldogs tied up the game at 1-1 with a run scoring single from Hunter Hines. They took the lead and added insurance runs in the eighth inning with a run scoring fielders choice by Logan Kohler, a run scoring walk by Bryce Chance, and a two run double by David Mershon.

This was enough for Mississippi State to win 5-1 and take the Governor's Cup. The Bulldogs won the season series against the Rebels as they took two games out of three earlier in the season to make their 2024 record, against Ole Miss, 3-1.

This win improved Mississippi State's record to 30-15, with a 12-9 conferene record. Ole Miss dropped their record to 23-21, with a 7-14 conference record.

This weekend, Mississippi State will take on Alabama for a three game series and Ole Miss will take on Auburn for a three game series.
