Former North Carolina State quarterback Philip Rivers’ son, Gunner Rivers is part of the 2027 high school recruiting class and has just received a recruiting ranking from 247 Sports. He ranks as four-star and the eighth best quarterback nationally in the class.
Gunner started as a freshman on the varsity team for St. Michael Catholic in Fairhope, Alabama in 2023 and put up eye-popping numbers of over 3,000 yards passing and 29 touchdowns to go with only four interceptions. The legacy recruit is coached by his father Philip and uncle Stephen who is the assistant coach.
Gunner had such a good freshman season that he was named to the MaxPreps High School Football Freshman All-American Team. Gunner was joined by fellow Alabama freshman quarterback Trent Seaborn who led 7A state power Thompson High School to an 11-2 record and state championship in 2023. The two serve as quite the one-two quarterback recruits within the state for the class of 2027.
Where is Gunner Rivers being recruited?
So far, Gunner has been recruited by NC State, but given the fact that he is right in the heart of SEC country, expect to see the SEC offers start rolling in soon for the freshman sensation. If he keeps up anywhere near his performance from freshman season, I expect the SEC offers to start rolling in during his sophomore season as teams always like to be sooner to the party rather than later.
Often times as well recruits do not receive their fifth star until later on in the process, so this has a strong possibility of happening as well. If it does, do not be surprised if he is offered from every SEC school, or close to it.
Gunner Rivers has been a football fanatic since an early age
His father Philip told AL.com that Gunner has been focused since he was at a young age. “We were watching the Colts on Monday night football. He couldn’t have been more than 7,” Philip Rivers said. “I was in the kitchen and he said ‘Hey Dad, Reggie Wayne just ran a sick post corner.”
“I said, ‘Wait, rewind that.’ Reggie Wayne did indeed run a sick post corner, and that is when I knew he just couldn’t get enough of it.”
What is next for Gunner Rivers?
With the sophomore season on the horizon, Rivers will undoubtedly be more in the spotlight give his success as a freshman. Expect national recruiting rankings on all services to start coming about for the 2027 class as the year progresses. Rivers should be able to start taking visits as well to programs giving us more of a feel as to what direction or part of the country he is leaning towards.
