Quinn Ewers on the hot seat? Here's what you need to know
Quinn Ewers is going into his second full season as the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns. He is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he led the Longhorns to the college football playoff semifinal and threw for 3,479 yards and 22 touchdowns with only six interceptions. This goes along with a completion percentage of 69%.
These stats should make Ewers’ job more than secure for 2024, right? Wrong. Waiting in the wings is star backup Arch Manning, who has been coveted since coming out of high school in 2022. On3 had Manning ranked as the number one player nationally. And with those kinds of accolades and Manning going into his second year in Austin, the pressure is squarely on Ewers to stay at the top of his game.
How did Arch Manning do in Texas’ spring game?
In Texas’ spring game, Manning went 19-for-26 for 355 yards and three touchdowns. His first pass was a 75-yard touchdown and he started the game 10-for-10. These stats are eye-popping. And it appears Manning is more than ready to take the throne.
Behind Manning as well is true freshman Trey Owens who is no slouch himself, further putting the pressure on Ewers to stay at the top of his game. Owens is out of Cypress, Texas and was ranked as the 20th quarterback in the high school class of 2023 by On3.
What are the expectations for the Texas Longhorns in 2024?
Needless to say, expectations are high in Austin coming off of an 11-1 regular season under head coach Steve Sarkisian who is entering his fourth season with the Longhorns. So for Ewers, it better be all systems go, or he could find himself on the bench pretty quickly with a now experienced Manning behind him heading into 2024.
