Ranking the most exciting SEC football players of all-time
4. Archie Manning (QB, Ole Miss)
Manning transcended the game way before time. His dual threat ability was a rarity back when he played for the Ole Miss Rebels from 1968-1970. Manning would throw for 31 touchdowns and 40 interceptions during his three years in Oxford, but his electricity is what set him apart despite the high interception total.
What is noteworthy that most overlook is that dual threat ability mentioned previously. Manning was so fun to watch on the ground in addition to the through the air. He would rush for 823 yards during his three years with the Rebels and account for another 25 touchdowns on the ground during that time.
3. Billy Cannon (RB, LSU)
This was a name before all names and unfortunately goes largely unnoticed by many fans in the SEC today. But Cannon was a real game changer for the LSU Tigers from 1957-1959 in the backfield. Cannon ran for 1,857 yards and 19 touchdowns in three seasons for the Tigers, which in those days were outstanding numbers.
Cannon’s “Halloween Run” in 1959 was his most famous one with the #1 Tigers trailing 3-0 to #3 Ole Miss before Cannon ripped off an 89 yard punt return for a touchdown.
