The quarterback controversy for the Texas A&M Aggies is heating up between Conner Weigman and Marcel Reed.

Texas A&M starting quarterback Conner Weigman unfortunately has suffered another injury that has sidelined him for the Aggies in 2024. Although Weigman’s injury is minor and only a sprained AC joint, it caused him to miss the game this past weekend against the University of Florida. In that game, the Aggies gave the reigns to redshirt freshman quarterback Marcel Reed.

The Aggies would win the contest behind Reid 33-20, but it honestly was not even that close. At one point, the Aggies led by as many as 25 in the contest. Reed would 11-for-17 in the contest throwing for 178 yards and two touchdowns through the air, while rushing for 83 yards on 13 attempts and scoring another touchdown on the ground.

Although Weigman has dual threat ability as well, Reed appears to be even more dynamic with the ball in his hands, and this is not the first time Aggie fans have seen it. Last year in the 2023 Texas Bowl against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Reid was thrust into action due to injuries at the quarterback position as well and 20-for-33 for 361 yards, running for another 29 and a touchdown on the ground.

Why does Texas A&M have a quarterback controversy?

Although Weigman was recruiting to Texas A&M to be the “next man up”, the former industry five-star from the class of 2022 did not live up to the billing in a highly anticipated pre-season matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in week one in College Station. Weigman would have a historically poor performance going 12-for-30 passing with zero touchdowns and two interceptions to his credit.

Steve Spurrier comments on Texas A&M’s quarterback situation

After the game against the Gators in Gainesville, even former Florida Gators head coach and Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Steve Spurrier weighed in stating that he thought Reed was much better than Weigman.

“(Mike) Elko, luckily, his starter got hurt because the other kid is a much better player,” Spurrier said. “My grandson is an assistant quarterback coach at A&M. His fiancée, she was happy that backup quarterback got in there instead of the one that was the starter the first game. So maybe they’ve learned a lot their third game of the year also.”

Although Weigman’s status for Saturday is still uncertain, the different between Reed and Weigman as far as quality of play from the quarterback position was not only transparent to the common fan, but to folks like Spurrier as well who know good quarterback play when they see it. Time will tell, but big changes may be in store for the long run in College Station.
