Arch Manning started the day on the bench as the backup quarterback of the Texas Longhorns against UTSA, but did not end there. After starting quarterback Quinn Ewers’ abdominal injury in the second half against the Roadrunners, Manning was inserted into the starting lineup. Manning would thrive and the Longhorns would win the game 56-7.

Manning would throw up tremendous passing numbers in the contest going 9-for-12 for 223 yards and four touchdowns. Manning’s work on the ground however would be even more impressive.

What record did Arch Manning almost break?

Manning ran the all three times for 53 yards, but even that is not the story. The story is a 67-yard touchdown run that Manning had that is the longest since 2005 when then Longhorn’s quarterback Vince Young had a record 80-yard touchdown run for a quarterback.

Manning’s run would show him juking a UTSA defender out of his shoes before outrunning the rest of the defense and scampering off to the end zone. This type of dual threat ability from Manning was not necessarily well known to this point against FBS competition. The redshirt freshman seems to be living up to the billing however as the number one overall high school recruit in the class of 2023.

What did Vince Young say to Arch Manning?

Manning’s ability is getting so much attention that even the record-setting quarterback Vince Young chimed in.

Similar comments were made about Louisville’s Lamar Jackson by former Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick when Jackson was in college when Vick stated that he felt Jackson was better than he was at that point in his career. This proved to be true as we know as Jackson is now taking over the NFL with an MVP award to his credit.

If Manning’s journey is remotely similar to Jackson’s as far as how he pans out, great things are in store for the Longhorns in the future.
