Kentucky Shuts Out USC Upstate

The Kentucky Wildcats advance to 2-0 after a shutout victory over the USC Upstate Spartans.

Dominic Niman got the start on the mound for the Wildcats. In five innings of work, Niman struck out six battes and allowed four hits, one walk, and zero earned runs. This was enough for Niman to pick up his first victory on the season.

Ryan Hagenow pitched three scoreless innings of relief. Johnny Hummel also pitched a scoreless inning of relief which got him his first save on the season.

Mathieu Curtis got the start for the Spartans, but got unlucky. In four innings pitched, Curtis struck out two batters and allowed three hits, three walks, and three unearned runs. This gave him the loss, but the runs he allowed were not his fault.

All three of Kentucky's runs were scored on fielders choices or a run scoring groundout. Grant Smith had the lone run batted in.

Although the pitching from both teams were solid, bad defense from the Spartans allowed the Wildcats to win this one, 3-0. Game three is this afternoon at noon central time.
