Top Three SEC Baseball Draft Prospects
By Baron Dionis
A summer ago we saw four players from the Southeastern Conference get drafted in the top ten picks of the 2023 Major League Draft. Those players were Paul Skenes, Dylan Crews, Wyatt Langford, and Chase Dollander. These four are each top prospects in all of Major League Baseball.
This year, the Southeastern Conference has another three prospects that could potentially be drafted in the top ten. Before the college baseball season begins, let’s take a look at what players are leading the conference in the Major League Draft prospect rankings.
Charlie Condon: First Base/Outfield, Georgia
The Georgia Bulldogs have a top prospect in all of college baseball. Charlie Condon is a first baseman and outfielder with one of the best bats in the country. Condon has a great story as he started off his collegiate career as a walk-on at Georgia. After redshirting his freshman year, Condon had a great redshirt freshman season emerging as a top five prospect in all of college baseball.
Last season, Condon finished off an impressive 2023 season with 25 home runs, 67 runs batted in, and a .386 batting average. He also had 81 hits, 10 doubles, and 33 base on balls. Condon will be one of the top returning hitters in all of college baseball.
Condon’s scouting grades are; Hit: 60, Power: 60, Run: 40, Arm: 55, Field: 50, Overall: 60.
Jac Caglianone: First Base/Left Handed Pitcher, Florida
Two-way prospects are always exciting and are very difficult to find. Jac Caglianone is the best two way in the country. The Florida Gators are led by their junior left handed pitcher and first baseman. Power is the best word to describe Caglianone. He can throw an upper 90 mile per hour fastball and lead all of college baseball in homeruns. As a matter of fact, he did lead all of college baseball in homeruns in 2023.
In 2023, Caglianone had a huge sophomore season where he posted a .323 batting average with 33 home runs and 90 runs batted in. He also had 91 hits, 14 doubles, and 17 base on balls. As a pitcher, Caglianone went 7-4 with a 4.34 earned run average. He also had 87 strikeouts in 74.2 innings pitched. As stats show, Calgianone is a top player on the mound and at the plate.
Caglianone’s scouting grades as a hitter are; Hit: 45, Power: 65, Run: 40, Arm: 60, Field: 55, Overall: 55. Caglianone’s scouting grades as a pitcher are; Fastball: 70, Slider: 50, Cutter: 50, Changeup: 50, Control: 40, Overall: 50.
Tommy White: Third Base, Louisiana State
There really was nothing bad to say about the Louisiana State Tigers last season as they won the College World Series. In fact, they had two players selected with the first two picks. The Tigers now have another player who can be taken in the early first round in Tommy White. Before becoming a top prospect at Louisiana State, White began his career at North Carolina State University where he led his team in homeruns as a freshman.
Last season, White had a big offensive season where he had a .374 batting average with 24 home runs and 105 runs batted in. Those are some incredible numbers. He also had 102 hits, 24 doubles, and 23 base on balls. White’s bat is really good, but he does not have much defense or speed to follow.
White’s scouting grades are; Hit: 55, Power: 60, Run: 30, Arm: 50, Field: 40, Overall: 55.
Overall the Southeastern Conference has a ton of talent heading into the season. Charlie Condon and Tommy White are both top hitters while Jac Caglianone is a top two-way prospect.
