Which Teams are still Fighting for a Spot in the SEC Baseball Tournament?
By Baron Dionis
Their is only one more weekend of conference games, which means the SEC Tournament is coming up. The SEC Tournament is going to start on May 21st with game one starting at 10:30 EST.
Only 12 out of the 14 SEC teams make it to the SEC Tournament. This means the bottom teams have to battle for the remaining spots. Let's take a look at the teams who have not yet clinched a spot in the SEC Tournament.
Missouri Tigers
The Missouri Tigers have not been that great of team this year. They did sweep Florida when the Gators were ranked sixth in the country, but aside from that series, the Tigers have not played well this season. Their record currently sits at 22-30, with an 8-19 conference record.
The Tigers currently are last in the SEC East with their poor conference record. In the entire SEC, they are 13th. They are the longshots out of the three non-clinched teams.
To make the SEC Tournament, Missouri will need to sweep Mississippi State this weekend and they would need Ole Miss to win at least two against LSU. If this scenario happened, LSU and Missouri would be tied in conference play with an 11-19 record.
If Missouri loses one game in the series against Mississippi State, then they are eliminated. Not only will Missouri fans be rooting for themselves this weekend, but for Ole Miss too. If the Rebels sweep LSU and Missouri sweeps, Missouri will be the 12th seed in the SEC Tournament.
LSU Tigers
The LSU Tigers have been very disappointing this season as they have declined tremendously after winning the 2023 College World Series. They recently have been heating up, but still remain uncertain whether or not they will be in Hoover, Alabama for the SEC Tournament. They currently have an overall record of 33-20, with a conference record of 10-17.
The Tigers are currently in sixth place in the SEC West. In the entire SEC, they are 12th. They currently are in the tournament, but this weekends series could change things.
This weekend, LSU will take on Ole Miss for a three game series. If LSU wins two out of three, or sweeps, they are in the tournament. If they get swept, then they will have to rely on Missouri to lose at least one. If Missouri loses twice, LSU is in the tournament, no matter what.
LSU should be able to clinch with at least one win this weekend, but if Missouri performs well then LSU could be in trouble.
Ole Miss Rebels
The Ole Miss Rebels have been a decent team this year, but have been near the bottom of the SEC all season. They recently won a series against the top ranked Texas A&M Aggies, but aside from that have been average. Their overall record on the season sits at 27-25, with a conference record of 11-16.
The Rebels are currently in fifth place in the SEC West and in the entire conference are 11th. They are also in the tournament, but they are still not guaranteed.
This weekend, Ole Miss will take on LSU in a three game series. If they win one game in this series, then they are in the tournament. If they get swept, then they have to rely on Missouri not sweeping Mississippi State. If Missouri loses at least one, Ole Miss is in the tournament.
Florida Gators
The Florida Gators have been another disappointing team this season after being the runner-up in the College World Series. They have not been great this season as they have an overall record of 26-25, with a conference record of 11-16.
The Gators are currently in sixth place in the SEC East and are tied with Ole Miss in the entire conference. They currently would make it to the tournament, but they have not yet clinched.
This weekend, the Gators will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in a three game series. If Florida wins just one game, then they are in the tournament. If they get swept, then they have to rely on Missouri losing at least one.
The SEC Tournament is a very exciting event and this year it will be very competetive. There are some very great teams, but with the battle to make the tournament at the bottom of the conference, it appears to be very even all around. Stay tuned for this weekends series.
